Abstract/Contents:Booker Seeds in Sleaford have designed their cultivar trials to match those conducted at the Sports Turf Research Institute in Bingley, West Yorkshire. This enables researchers to conduct similar trials and observe any variations in the performance of cultivars due to different growing conditions. A new wear simulator machine adds to the studies of wear and traffic on trial plots. 'Cartel', 'Master', and 'Surprise' perennial ryegrass and "Cincy' creeping red fescue cultivars are discussed. Other studies include: 1) research into seed mixtures for farmers seeking alternative uses for surplus land under the UK set-aside program, 2) assessment of wild flowers, nitrogen-fixing legumes and low maintenance amenity type grasses, and 3) and the soil quality of set-aside land use and the ability to quickly revert to arable production of home-grown food should the need arise.
