Abstract/Contents:Discusses possible methods of reducing pesticide use, highlighting integrated pest management (IPM). Explains that "an integrated pest management (IPM) program is a multidisciplinary, ecologically based pest management system that uses all available methods to keep pests at acceptable levels while minimising [minimizing] the effects on people, environment and turf...An effective IPM program is based on tolerating a level of pest damage that does not significantly reduce the acceptability of the turf." Lists possible components of an IPM program, including "understanding turf conditions and characteristics"; "surveying pests"; "defining pest damage thresholds"; "developing a monitoring and record-keeping program"; and "developing and implementing pest control strategies." Also biological control, stating that "the most successful biological control methods include the use of entomopathogenic nematodes for the control of scarab larvae and Trichoderma spp. fungi for the control of fungal pathogens such as Pythium spp., Rhizoctonia spp. and Gerlachia spp." Concludes that "with the increasing pressure to reduce or in some situations eliminate the use of pesticides on turfgrass in the urban environment, turf managers need to adopt Integrated Pest Management programs."
