Abstract/Contents:"Yardstick is a benchmarking project between local authorities and other park providers, with the purpose of collecting and comparing information on a range of common parks and recreation management processes. It has been operating since 2002 and there are currently 56 members (Dec 2004) including DoC and seven Australian organisations. Yardstick is managed by a steering group of parks and recreation managers representing a range of local authorities from around the country...The 'Yardstick Best Practice' session will study how the information collected from the Yardstick surveys can be used to establish Best practice guidelines for the parks industry. The value of using this information to set guidelines that cover the level of provision or service and cost of services will be explored and discussed. The most value from the Yardstick information is believed to be in the development of best practice guidelines for our business and management practices. The session will explore and discuss various examples from the Yardstick results where best practice guidelines could be established. Leading on from best practice is the opportunity to establish formal standards. The NZ parks industry has very few standards with which to work compared to a number of other industries. There appears to be an increasing interest and demand for such standards to help guide parks managers and policy makers. There have been several recent developments in the review of existing and establishment of new standards. Yardstick has been able to provide information relating to these standards. Could the concept of best practice guidelines be developed to the establishment of formal standards? Stephen Bunting from Hastings District Council will demonstrate through a number of case study examples how Yardstick information has been used to inform and influence Council decision making on resource allocation and to guide decision making on reserve provision, policy and operational issues."
