Abstract/Contents:"The Christchurch City Council has had an active programme of managing its coast line, since developing the Christchurch Beaches and Coastal Parks Management Plan in 1995. The benfits of coastal management include: Coastal protection, Biodiversity protection and enhancement, Recreation, Aesthetic attractiveness. This session will include: How the Coastal Parks Rangers manage the sandy and rock shoreline on the edge of a City with potentiall 300,000 beach goers. Walkways, sand ladders plantings and sand fences are used to cope with the dynamic coastal processes of erosion and accretion. Vegetation - using native sadn binding species on the dune edge and appropriate back dune species. After several years of experimenting with different species it is apparent that some dozen species are more liekly to survive the harsh coastal conditions. Dune recontouring has been done to reshape large unstable dunes. The process for duing this work is reviewed. Support for parks managers through the Coastal Dune Vegetation Network (CDVN) - a national network coordinated by Forest Research. This group has been very useful for the coastal management programme through offering seminar, field trips and research projects. The Christchurch City Council's Learning Through Action programme for environmental education offers school children of different age levels the chance to come to the beach and learn about coastal management with curriculum linked programmes. These popular programmes and feedback from teachers will be explained. A review of the Centerbury community Coast Care groups will be made. These groups vary in their involvement and interest in active coastal management. There will be time to question the presenters on elements of coastal management. A field trip the next day will visit several of the coastal management sites."
