Abstract/Contents:Suggests potential methods for relieving soil compaction on bowling greens. Explains that "soil compaction is defined as the pressing together of soil particles resulting in a more dense soil mass with less pore space...Soil compaction can occur at different depths and for different reasons." Also suggests that "the ideal soil is one with good proportions of silt, sand, clay and organic material - these are called loamy soils. They rarely compact severely and offer excellent nutrient and moisture retaining properties." States that "compaction is a consequence of both intensive usage and management operations that are associated with modern turf culture." Emphasizes that "there is no 'silver bullet' or special potion that...can [be sprayed] on or [fed to] greens to cure compaction." States that "when determining the best treatment method to be sued, first consider where in the soil profile [one needs] to target the treatment."
