Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the development of a procedure "to describe the workload of racehorses, so that the total distance within various velocity ranges can be related to the responses of the musculoskeletal system as the training programme [program] progresses, with a view to using this to predict and then recognise [recognize] very early injury, so that worse injury can be prevented." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "nineteen thoroughbred horses (15 fillies and 4 geldings) were bred and raised at the Flock House thoroughbred stud until around 19 months of age. After thorough clinical and other...examinations the horses were transported to the racecourse for breaking-in and race training." Concludes that "the collection of this type of data provides the first step in quantifying the relative use and demands placed on the different surfaces at racehorse training centres [centers]. It is essential that data is collected from a larger number of horses at more training centres to obtain an accurate indication of which surfaces are used to train racehorses in New Zealand and how often these surfaces are used. This would enable racecourse managers and associated track professionals to develop management strategies specific to each age group of horses at the training centre." |
