Abstract/Contents:"Existing standards for the hardness of winter games pitches in the United Kingdom are based in the use of a 0.5 kg Clegg soil impact tester with the test mass released from 0.55 m. Internationally, a 2.25 kg test mass is more widely used and, because of its greater kinetic energy before impact, it is potentially more effective in characterising the hardness of the underlying soil rather than just the immediate surface layer. Measurements on a range of winter games pitch surfaces showed strong correlation (r2=0.88) between assessments using a 0.5 kg test mass released from 0.55 m and a 2.25 kg test mass released from 0.45 m. Performance standards for different sports were re-calculated based on use of the 2.25 kg test mass. Preferred ranges for different sports at a good quality, non-professional level were as follows: football 45 to 90 gravities; Rugby 40 to 70 gravities, hockey 60 to 90 gravities. The normal range for values using the 2.25 kg Clegg impact tester were also determined for professional soccer and the central range, encompassing approximately 80% of measured values, was between 65 and 100 gravities."
