Abstract/Contents:"Mounting concern over the distribution of finite water supplies in the Western U.S. underscores the importance of selecting turf species and varieties with low water use rates. Tall fescue is becoming an increasingly popular turfgrass due to the successful efforts of breeders to improve leaf texture, color and shoot density. However, no data are available on ET rates for the newer cultivars. A greenhouse study was designed to compare relative water use rates by 21 cultivars of tall fescue. Turf was grown from seed in columns (15 cm dia., 30 cm deep) filled with fritted clay. ET was determined by the water balance method on several consecutive days, 5 months after sowing. Observed differences in ET will be discussed in terms of shoot morphological parameters."
