Abstract/Contents:"Smooth crabgrass is a serious problem in turf. Seed begin to germinate around April 1-15 in Mississippi and continue to germinate throughout the growing season. Currently, several herbicides are available that will give good control but they may be expensive or may injure the turf. Therefore, herbicides that have been used exclusively in row crops in the past are now being evaluated for use in turf. A number of field studies were conducted to evaluate several of these herbicides for optimum rate, application date, turf injury and length of effective control. Pendimethalin, flumetralin, metolacher, EL 107 (Elanco) and oxadiazon gave 68% or better control of smooth crabgrass for 7 months after application. Smooth crabgrass control with prodiamine, pendimethalin, and oxadiazon was 75% or better 12 weeks after application when activated by watering in at 0 to 21 days after application. No differences in activation time were observed. In a timing study in which the initial of two applications of pendimethalin (1.68 to 2.8 followed by 1.68 kh/ha) or bensulide (8.4 followed by 5.6 kg/ha) was made between February 1 and March 15 and the second application 4 to 11 weeks later, all treatments gave 70% or better control of smooth crabgrass for 37 weeks after the initial treatment. Prodiamine at 1.12 kg/ha applied in October maintained 83% control of smooth crabgrass while bensulide at 14.0 kg/ha gave only 48% control 12 months after application. In a seperate study in another plot area, 7 months after a March application there was 75% or greater smooth crabgrass control in prodiamine (0.56 to 2.2 kg/ha) treated plots contrasted to 48% in bensulide plots. Prodiamine applied in May or July did not reduce establishment of overseeded turf in October. Metolacher applied at 2.24 kg/ha gave 78% control of smooth crabgrass 12 weeks after application and 70% at 4.48 kg/ha 30 weeks after treatment. Metolchlor + atrazine gave 70% contro of smooth crabgrass for 21 weeks after treatment and SAN 582 (Sandoz Crop Protection) gave 90% control of smooth crabgrass for 9 weeks. Oxadiazon (50% wettable powder) at 1.68 to 3.36 kg/ha, oxadiazon (2% granular) at 3.36 kg/ha and flumetralin at 1.34 kg/ha gave 73% or greater control of crabgrass 30 weeks after application. PPG-1259 (PPG Industries) gave good control of Carolina geranium, mouseear chickweed, dandelion and annual fleabane, dandelion and white clover."
