Abstract/Contents:Describes the "Biarritz hole," beginning with the example of the third hole at France's Biarritz la Phare course in 1888, the "Chasm," which was built by Willie Dunn Jr., of Musselburgh, Scotland. Explains the process of Charles Blair Macdonald's "famous hole concept," which utilized the "Chasm" at his National Golf Links of America in Southampton, Long Island. States that Macdonald's protege, Seth Raynor, later built some of the more unique versions of the Biarritz, notably at "Fisher's Island (5th hole), Chicago, Lido's 8th along the beach...Yale's 9th and the 11th at Creek - on an island, while Charles Banks' best known version is located at The Knoll in New Jersey." Describes the "most famous Biarritz hole designed by Seth Raynor," which was ironically credited to Dr. Alister Mackenzie. States that this hole, designed at Cypress Point "just prior to his untimely death...was indeed the finest of Raynor's Biarritz creations."
