Abstract/Contents:Presents potential advantages to composted biosolids in turfgrass sod. States that "composted municipal biosolids (CMB) recommended rates on urban landscapes in Texas range up to 30% of the soil volume in which CMB is incorporated. The volume-based rates enhance physical properties of soil and turfgrass sod while cycling nutrients and organic carbon back to urban landscapes through sod. The import of CMB through transplanted sod could conserve water and reduce sediment and nutrient losses through surface runoff." Presents a study in which "soil coverage rates after sprigging of Tifway bermudagrass were compared with and without incorporation of CMB and supplemental fertilizer N [nitrogen] in a sandy loam soil." Reports that "computer analysis of digital photographs taken during early establishment in fall and after spring green-up revealed greater percentages of turfgrass cover than without CMB. Compared to soil without CMB, percent turfgrass cover with CMB was 64% greater at two weeks, 21% greater at eight weeks, and 10% greater at 27 weeks after sprigging." Also reports that "greater water retention and conservation in CMB-amended sod and soil was associated with reduced sediment transport in run-off compared to sprigged Tifway without CMB." Concludes that "CMB in soil depths below transplanted sod did not limit run-off loss of nitrate nitrogen compared to other treatments."
