Abstract/Contents:"The effect of prodiamine, oxadiazon (Ronstar), benefin (balan), and pendimethalin (Pre-M) on the vegetative establishment of four bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) cultivars was evaluated in a field study conducted during summer, 1986. Herbicide treatments were applied, before plugging, on 5 by 5 ft. plots ( with a 1 ft. border) on 17 June. On 20 June, eight 2 inch plugs were placed around the perimeter of each plot. The four bermudagrass cultivars evaluated were 'Tifgreen', 'Sunturf', 'U-3', and 'Common'. Plug field survival was evaluated at 60 DAT, and percent ground cover was visually rates at 130 DAT. Root quality was evaluated at 130 DAT by randomly removing four terminal stolons per plot and visually rating the root. Root quality ranged from short, blackened tear-drop shaped roots to long white healthy roots. No significant cultivar by herbicide interaction occurred for all the variables evaluated. Low rates (1 lb. a.i./A or less) of prodiamine appeared to be safe for all cultivars tested. The high rate of prodiamine (4.0 lb a.i./A) and pendimethalin (6.0 lb. a.i./A) significantly reduced the percent ground cover. Oxadiazon was generally safe, even at the high rate of 8 lb. a.i./A. Benefin (6 lb. a.i./A), prodiamine (4 lb. a.i./A), and pendimehtalin (6 lb. a.i./A) were detrimental to plug field survival. The results indicate that herbicide use before establishment of bermudagrass plugs is a viable method for reducing weed competition during the critical time of establishment."
