Abstract/Contents:"Field studies were initiated in the fall of 1985 and spring of 1986 to determine the comparative efficacy of the various rates of prodiamine and the standard commercial herbicides for short and long term control of annual weedy grasses and broadleaves. Twenty four locations were selected as study sites on various soil types throughout Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. Herbicides were applied preemergence to weed germination on established common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) sods. Prodiamine was applied at rates from 0.56 to 2.24 kg a.i./ha and one or more of pendimethalin, oxadiazon, and benefin were applied at the 1X labeled rate as standards. Locations were selected that had a history of high natural infestations of crabgrass (Digitaria sp.) and annual bluegrass (Poa annua). Plots were overseeded with crabgrass (Digitaria sp.) and annual bluegrass (Poa annua) to supplement the natural population. Evaluations were visual estimates of weed control compared to the untreated check plots. Early and late season evaluations were made to monitor herbicide breakdown. Prodiamine at rates above 0.84 kg ai/ha, benefin at 3.36 kg and oxadiazon at 4.48 kg gave excellent control of annual bluegrass (94+%) following a fall application. Pendimethalin at 2.24 kg and prodiamine at 0.56 kg resulted in 84% and 80% control of annual bluegrass, respectively. Prodiamine at rates above 0.84 kg ai/ha also gave excellent control of common chickweed (Stellaria media). Prodiamine applied in the fall gave good to excellent control of crabgrass the following summer at rates above 1.12 kg ai/ha. The early spring evaluations showed the 0.56 kg rate to give good control, but this rate broke rather quickly and offered poor control by late season evaluations. Benefin at 3.36, pendimethalin at 2.24 and oxadiazon at 4.48 kg ai/ha offered little crabgrass control when applied in the fall. Spring applications for crabgrass control showed prodiamine at 0.56 kg ai/ha to be superior to benefin at the 3.36 kg ai/ha rate and equal to pendimethalin at 2.24 kg ai/ha. Early season evaluations were different from late season evaluations only at the 0.56 kg ai/ha rate of prodiamine. Benefin at 3.36 and pendimethalin at 2.24 kg ai/ha also showed control with late season evaluations. Results of this research indicate that prodiamine is a long residual preemergence herbicide with a relatively high per unit activity that will offer season long control of crabgrass and annual bluegrass at 0.56 kg ai/ha. Common chickweed can also be controlled with prodiamine at rates above 0.84 kg ai/ha. Year long control of annual bluegrass can be obtained with a single fall application of rates above 1.12 kg ai/ha"
