Abstract/Contents:"Imidazolinone herbicides have shown potential for control of purple nutsedge, wild garlic, and a number of other weeds in warm season turfgrasses. Common, 'Tifgreen', 'Tifway', 'Tiflawn', and 'Tifdwarf' bermudagrasses, 'Meyer' zoysiagrass, common centipedegrass, and 'Raleigh' St. Augustinegrass have shown tolerance to one or more of this group of herbicides. Imazaquin at rates of 0.14 kg/ha or higher did not severely injure these turfgrasses, although discoloration and/or growth retardation was observed for a period of usually no more than 2 to 3 weeks. Discoloration was observed only on bermudagrass turf of golf driving range tees or fairways which were mowed at 0.9 to 1.9 cm three to four times weekly. Turfs maintained at higher mowing heights were not injured by imazaquin except when the turf was under water stress, very low fertility management, or other very poor growing conditions. The addition of MSMA to the spray mixture significnatly reduced the amount and duration of bermudagrass discoloration. Bermudagrasses were severely injured by applications of imazapyr or imazethapyr unless the grass was dormant at the time of application. Common centipedegrass appeared to be quite tolerant of imazethapyr at rates up to 0.84 kg/ha. Imazaquin gave good control of broadleaf dock and mouseear chickweed; poor control of dandelion, henbit and Virginia buttonweed; and fair to good control of white clover especially at higher rates (0.56 to 0.84 kg/ha). Fall applications of imazapyr to actively growing common bermudagrass on a highway right-of-way site at rates of 0.07 to 0.28 kg/ha, and higher rates (0.2 to 0.28 kg/ha) applied in the winter or spring to dormant bermudagrass significnatly delayed transition from dormancy to full turf cover. Control of tall fescue, annual fleabane, and winter vetch was good with fall, winter , or spring applications of imazapyr. Imazapyr applied in the spring at 0.28 kg/ha gave 50% suppression of bahiagrass seedheads for 25 weeks. Application of imazapyr at 50 or 100% green-up (cover of actively growing turfgrass) gave good control of bahiagrass at rates as low as 0.14 kg/ha."
