Abstract/Contents:"Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb.) and kudzu [Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi] are two hard-to-control perennial species which cause problems in the landscape, in orchards, and along highway rights-of way. Field experiments were conducted in 1986 to study the effectiveness of selected herbicides in the control of these two weed species. The objectives were: a) to determine the effectiveness of glyphosate for the control of Japanese honeysuckle and kudzu as affected by rate of application, time of application, and application with and without ethylan TT15 (Frigate) and b) to determine the effectiveness of glufosinate and imazapyr at selected rates and/or times of application for the control of Japanese honeysuckle and kudzu. Glyphosate was applied at 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha with and without Frigate. Frigate was applied at 0.5% v/v. Glufosinate and imazapyr were each applied at rates of 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha. In all cases the initial time of application was intended to coincide with the time that three to five new leaves were fully expanded during the first flush of growth in the spring. Each successive application was applied at approximately six week intervals. Glyphosate with and without Frigate was applied at three application timings. Glufosinate only applied at the first two application timings and imazapyr was only appied at the first timing. Treatments were applied with a K-5 floodjet nozzle operated at 69 kPa to deliver 234 1/ha. The experimental design for all studies was a randomized complete block design. Visual ratings were taken 21, 42, and 63 days after treatment (DAT) to access weed control with 0 = no weed control and 100 = complete weed control. Based on percent control ratings taken through 63 DAT there were no significant differences between glyphosate applied with and without Frigate in the control of Japanese honeysuckle and kudzu. Rate and time of application of glyphosate applied with and without Frigate caused significant effects in the control of both species. Imazapyr gave slow knockdown of kudzu. Glufosinate gave nearly complete knockdown of the above ground portions of kudzu at 21 DAT and gave adequate control of Japanese honeysuckle at 21 DAT. At 63 DAT regrowth of both species from underground portions allowed considerable recovery with glufosinate. At 63 DAT imazapyr prevented regrowth of both weed species."
