Abstract/Contents:"Basal bark herbicide treatments for selective hardwood removal in right-of-way vegetation control are both cost effective and efficacious. This paper describes "streamline" basal application which is a modification of previously described basal techniques and reports on field trial efficacy of this technique and low volume basal application with triclopyr and picloram herbicides. Field trials were initiated in Arkansas in 1985 in which streamline basal bark application, consisting of applying 1-4 ml of a herbicide mixture of 20 percent triclopyr, 10 percent surfactant, and 70 percent diesel oil (v/v), was made to one side only of target stems at or near the root collar. Efficacy ratings at the end of the second growing season showed stem kill of hardwood species ranged from 70 to 100 percent. Similar stem kill occurred when a picloram + triclopyr (1 lb ae/gal + 2 lb ae/gal) herbicide was used to form the 20:10:70 percent (v/v) mixture. Results of the streamline testing were compared with those from 1984 applications of triclopyr and picloram + triclopyr as low volume basal treatments to similar hardwood species in the Northeast. Hardwood defoliation two years after low volume basal application ranged from 75 to 100 percent. With reported hardwood control following streamline and low volume applications being equal to reported efficacy of conventional basal bark herbicide applications, the streamline and low volume methods have merit as cost effective and efficacious right-of-way vegetation management treatments."
