Abstract/Contents:"The growth characteristics of selected dinitroaniline-resistant (R) and -susceptible (S) goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.] biotypes were measured under competitive field conditions. Two competition studies with varying proportions of R and S biotypes were established in 1985 and 1986. In the first study an R (FR) and S (OS) biotype with comparable growth characteristics were used. The second study consisted of and FR and S (AS) biotype in which the AS was a shorter more prostrate plant as determined by a previous study. Seedlings were planted on a 15 x 15 cm grid in 8 rows x 10 columns or 10 rows x 10 columns in proportions of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. Measurements were taken at inflorescence maturity. The results of the first study indicated no difference in competitive ability of FR ad OS biotypes. Results were similar as obtained when these biotypes were grown under non-competative field conditions. In the second study, FR was taller, produced more spikes/inflorescence, and had a greater vegetative dry weight than AS, but a greater number of tillers and inflorescence and a greater reproductive dry weight was produced by the AS than the FR biotype. In 1985, AS reduced the height and the number of spikes/inflorescence of FR, but FR reduced the number of seedheads and vegetative dry weight of the AS biotype. These results indicate that the R biotype is equally competitive with its S counterpart."
