| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study condcuted "to evaluate the response of 2-week old Kentucky bluegrass seedlings to applications of iron and cytokinin-like material." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "root boxes with dimensions of 30 cm [centimeters] x 75 cm x 45 cm were constructed from plywood and lined with a heavy plastic. Fifty 3.0 cm holes were cut in the top and 30.5 cm sections of 2.5 cm diameter tubing were placed in each hole." Reports that "the mid-winter greenhouse study measuring leaf number, root density, and shoot and root dry weights showed the treatment of Banner + Fe [iron] significantly enhanced initial seedling development...The mid-spring study in which the root boxes were kept outside also indicated positive responses from applications of several different cytokinin materials." Concludes that "the significant increases in adventitious bud formation (either rhizome or tiller development) and root development could be very important in improving Kentucky bluegrass seedingling establishment and sod development. Additionally, increases in leaf number could also improve photosynthetic capacity and increase carbohydrate reserves in the plant." |
