| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the Wakefield Recreational Park test demonstration, stating that it is "the second major test demonstration made possible by the cooperation of the Fairfax County [Virginia] Park Authority, the Cooperative Extension Service and interested turfgrass industry professionals." Also briefly profiles the Mason District Park test, which "evaluated 16 different turfgrasses established [from] sod, seed and sprigs." Details methods and materials used in the test, stating that "the soil on the field at establishment contained 56% sand, 30% silt and 14% clay. Approximately one inch of Compro composted sludge was disced into the field during the week of May 27, 1985 with 500 lb [pounds]/Acre of 10-20-10." Reports that "as of July 23, 1985 the best of all the zoysia seeded plots was showing only 18% ground cover." Concludes that "this study has confirmed the need for strong fertilization, weed control and aerification programs to sustain even the best selections under heavy traffic conditions. It also demonstrates that there are many viable alternatives for the production of quality athletic field surfaces in Northern Virginia." |
