Abstract/Contents:Discusses possible soil compaction and wear management practices for athletic fields, suggesting that "traditional recommendations for managing soil compaction include various combinations of aerification and sand topdressing." Describes potential methods to "reduce soil compaction and improve the overall wear tolerance of bermudagrass athletic fields in Florida," including mowing, fertilizing, irrigation, thatch management, soil compaction, and topdressing practices. States that "there are two primary methods of relieving soil compaction on athletic fields. The first, core cultivation, is the practice of removing a soil core 5/8 to 1 inch in diameter to a depth of 3 to 4 inches...The second method is deep-tine cultivation in which a 3/4 inch solid tine is inserted 12 inches into the soil profile." Mentions that "the use of sideline tarps (covers) in bench areas where coaches and teams are located and along sidelines where cheerleaders stand, can help reduce...damage." Concludes that "the best approach to athletic field management brings together the administrators, coaches, band directors, teams and sports turf managers as a team with a common goal of maintaining high quality fields."
