Abstract/Contents: | Profiles Tyler Creek Golf Course and Campground in Western Michigan. Discusses environmental stewardship efforts at the course, highlighting its involvement with Trout Unlimited. States that "following a heavy rain during the summer of 2006, there were sounds of panic as over 2,000 fish began floating to the surface and lay motionless in the crevices of its banks. While it was obvious to the residents of the campground and the employees at Tyler Creek, what had happened was not the fault of the golf course. The location of the dying fish put the golf course right in the middle of the proverbial microscope. And although [the course shares] a watershed with an exploding dairy farm operation upstream, the connection to [its] namesake stream was undeniable." States that the course's involvement with Trout Unlimited "began with the visit from one of these members, Ron Barch...Soon...fruitful relationships were underway in the formation of the Tyler Creek Watershed Commission in which...managers of the Tyler Creek Golf Course were active members." Reports that "less than one year following [their] first work in the creek, numbers and size of brown trout have increased." Concludes that "Tyler Creek Golf Course and Campground has turned a devasating event into a great opportunity to practice what [they] preach and truly be 'green lungs against the urban plow.'" |
