Abstract/Contents:Discusses the role of the golf course superintendent, stating that "superintendents of the 21st century are emerging from their maintenance sheds and becoming increasingly visible 'frontline' managers, making their presence felt in boardrooms, membership meetings and in the community." Highlights the role of communication in the golf course superintendent profession, stating that "if there's one area of professional development where...superintendents differ from their forebears, it's communication. This encompasses anything (and everything) from meeting with facility leaders, fielding media queries, conversing with patrons and, obviously, updating the pro shop staff about current course conditions or issues." Concludes that "compared to the early days of the profession and the stereotypical portrait once painted of greenskeppers, the superintendents...have come a long way. And if the past offers a guide, the stature of these managers will only grow as they become even more integral components of any facility's operations team."
