Abstract/Contents:Suggests that, "fall is considered the preferred time for establishing turfgrass for several reasons. Summer annual weeds, such as crabgrass, goosegrass, and foxtail can make establishing turfgrass in the spring and summer a difficult prposition as the weeds will compete with the young turfgrass seeding for water, nutrients and sunlight. States that, "another factor that makes fall the optimal seeding time is the shorter day length...the shorter day length means there is going to be less time for the sun to dry the new establishment." Discusses broadleaf control explaining that, "as summer drags on and high temperatures and sporadic rainfall stress the turfgrass, the broadleaf weeds are also stressed. The broadleaf weeds may develop a thicker cuticle to prevent water loss and will also spend most of their energy on top growth as opposed to root growth." Also discuses "the best fertilizer to use for fall applications" Suggesting that, "one could easily choose a slow release nitrogen source and just let it release throughout September and October. Following up the September application with a fast release nitrogen source in late October or early November will get the nitrogen into the plant to make energy before the turf enters dormancy and result in early spring green up."
