Abstract/Contents:"A new systemic fungicide, α-(2-chlorophenyl)-α-cyclohexyl-5-pyrimidinemethanol (EL-279), applied once to soil has controlled and apparently eradicated Urocystis agropyri (flag smut) and Ustilago striiformis (stripe smut) in infected plants of Poa pratensis 'Merion'. Elimination of U. agropyri and 97% control of U. striiformis were obtained by only 0.25 mg and 1 mg, respectively, in 600 ml soil containing plants with 15 to 20 shoots. Plants cured of both smuts remained smut-free beyond 24 weeks, indicating eradication of the pathogens. Shoots infected with U. striiformis became chlorotic and died within 6 to 10 weeks after application and were replaced by healthy shoots arising from basal stem buds. Shoots infected with U. agropyri were not killed by effective dosaged of EL-279 and became smut-free by development of healthy tissue fro basal meristems. Healthy plants were only slightly affected by EL-279 at minimum effective dosages for smut eradication. Fugicide EL-279 is effective at a fraction of the dosage needed for comparable control by α-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-α-phenyl-5- pyrimidinemethanol (triarimol) which was reported previously as more effective than other systmeic chemicals for eradicaton of stripe smut and flag smut in P. pratensis."
