Abstract/Contents:"Puccinia zoysiae now infects zoysia lawngrasses and their hybrids from Maryland to Texas. P. zoysiae requires prolonged periods of high humidity for infection of zoysiagrass, Zoysia japonica. Rust occurs abundantly in partially shaded lawn areas because dew remains on leaves for sufficient time to permit spore germination and infection. In greenhouse tests, infection occurred and uredia developed only on leaves on inoculated plants kept at high humidity. This was accomplished by incubating inoculated leaves under beakers or in a polyethylene-covered chamber. Rust failed to develop on inoculated plants kept uncovered or grown in partial shade in the greenhouse. Urediospores infected zoysiagrass at temperatures ranging from 10-30°C (optimum 21-30°C). Uredial pustules developed on leaves of dormant zoysiagrass transplanted from a lawn to the greenhouse in late January and early March of two different years (minimum, -18°C). Rust, therefore, requires no alternate host for perpetuation even in the Beltsville area where zoysiagrass remains winter-dormant for 5 to 6 months."
