Abstract/Contents:Discusses a study conducted by "Dr. Bernd Leinauer, turfgrass researcher and associate professor at New Mexico State University and Dr. Victor Gibeault, horticulture specialist emeritus [at the] University of California Riverside...to find answers to the dilemma of maintaining green grass with less water." States that "the two are conducting studies in separate locations to identify grasses that will do well with less water, less fertilizer and less pesticide while still exhibiting acceptable turfgrass quality." Explains that "if homeowners learn to irrigate efficiently and plant proper grasses, they can save substantial amounts of water without converting their landscapes into rock gardens." Mentions that "southwestern [United States] states are increasingly focusing on restricting water use. New Mexico...mandated the metering of wells to assure that water allocations are actually being used, and allocations not documented as being used will be lost." Informs that "[Leinauer and Gibeault] identified the 12 most commonly used grasses in New Mexico and California...Both researchers added some grasses specific to their own regions using a total of 21 grasses including warm and cool-season, and desert natives." Reports that "the researchers found similar results in both the Riverside and Tucumcari locations. The cool-season grasses, in general, did not do well with the reduced irrigation." Concludes that "studies at the Tucumcari site will be continued...and Leinauer anticipates reducing irrigation even further. He is aiming for studies using only 50 percent of the recommended irrigation."
