Abstract/Contents:"Studies were conducted in greenhouse and growth chamber to investigate the activity of chlorimuron ehtyl in yellow and purple nutsedge. A single foliar application of chlorimuron ethyl caused abrupt cessation of growth, inhibited secondary shoot production, and killed parent tubers in both species. Application of 20 g/ha gave 84% control in yellow nutsedge and 100% in purple nutsedge. A 1 cm2 area in the middle of the 4th fully expanded leaf was treated with 15 ul of solution containing 0.18 uCi of 14C-chlorimuron ethyl and 0.2% (v/v) of X-77. The plants were harvested at 1, 2, 4 and 8 days after application (DAA). the treated area was washed with 10% methanol to remove unabsorbed 14C. Each plant was fractioned, lyophilized, combusted and radioactivity quantified using liquid scintillation spectrometry. Over 13% of the 14C recovered was absorbed and over 15% of the absorbed was translocated at 1 DAA in both species. This increased two-fold by 8DAA. Translocation was both acropetal and basipetal. The radioactivity was widely distributed in the plant. In both species, distribution of radioactivity (%) in the treated area and above the treated area differed from each and both were significantly greater than other fractions. The basal bulbs and rhizomes had the least accumulation."
