Abstract/Contents:"Several experimental and commercially available plant regulators (PGRs) were evaluated alone and in combination with triasulfuron for efficacy on three cool-season turfgrasses. Triasulfuron was evaluated for PGR activity as well as for general weed control. Materials were applied in 1988 at the Adelphia Research Center, Adelphia, N.J. The design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatments were applied on April 28 and July 18 to Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). A CO2-propelled backpack sprayer was used with water as the carrier. In addition to triasulfuron, the PGRs included were: mefluidide, amidochlor, paclobutrazol, and CGA 163935. Rates of triasulfuron alone and in combination with each of the PGRs were .02 and .04 kg/ha. The PGRs alone were also applied at two rates, the higher rate was 25% greater than the lower rate for each compound. No injury to the turf species was observed following the first treatment. They were applied after complete green-up in the ryegrass and tall fescue and near complete green-up in Kentucky bluegrass. Abundant rainfall following this application may have contributed to the success of this application. Following the second application was made during an extensive period of drought with limited irrigation. Injury could not be attributed entirely to chemical application as there was significant billbug (Sphrnophorus spp.) damage throughout the field (tall fescue included). Although there were significant differances amongst each of the turfgrass species, the triasulfuron + CGA 163935 combination at the high rate performed the best. This combination provided a more than 60% reduction in height and 80% reduction in clipping weight. Seedhead suppression was greater than 70%. Paclobutrazol alone at the low rate was the least effective. Color was enhanced by triasulfuron alone, triasulfuron combinations and CGA 163935. Color enhancement was the most pronounced with triasulfuron + CGA 163935 combinations. Triasulfuron at the high rate performed well as a growth regulator. The weed population was not uniform throughout the field, making it difficult to assess herbicidal efficacy. However, some injury to dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) and annual fleabane (erigeron annus L.) was observed six weeks following application."
