Abstract/Contents:"Field research to determine herbicide efficacy for large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control was conducted in 1987 and 1988. All treatments were applied to 2 by 2 m plots of Plush Kentucky bluegrass at the Turf Research Center at Virginia Tech. Herbicides were applied with either a CO2 backpack sprayer at 207 kPA with an application rate of 3.21 L/ha or a "Scott" drop type fertilizer spreader for the granular materials. The 1987 research was on established turf with a high crabgrass population (50 plants / 1.7 m2 in the controls). The herbicides tested were benefin, DCPA, oxadiazon, pendimethalin, and prodiamine. Turf quality was acceptable for all rates of DCPA, oxadiazon, pendimethalin, benefin and benefin combinations. Turf thinning was greatest with Fall applications of prodiamine. Crabgrass was adequately controlled by all treatments except Fall applications of DCPA. The 1988 research was conducted on Fall seeded Plush bluegrass. Crabgrass failed to emerge in any of the test plots in these experiments. The herbicides tested were MON 15151, MON 15177, prodiamine, oxadiazon, and pendimethalin. Turf quality and turf phytotoxicity was acceptable for all herbicides except the highest rates of MON 15151. Turf thinning was greatest with the high rate of MON 15151."
