Abstract/Contents:Discusses dirt maintenance in baseball fields. Suggests that "[one] will want to find out what materials are available in [one's] area." Explains that "standarized guidelines as developed through the collaboration of sports field managers and soil scientists are available the the American Society for Testing Material (ASTM)." States that "the kind of dirt [one] decides on all depends on what [one] can maintain and if [one has] a tarp for the field or not." States that "[one wants] to get the dirt as consistent as possible from wall to wall and maintain it at the same level from day to day." Gives a brief overview suggesting what on game day practices stating to "start by watering the dirt evenly. Then see what's drying out quicker and spot-water the second time so [one] is only hitting those dry spots." Suggests that "time is the deciding factor in the action to take if conditions are a little softer than [one] wants. If [one has] time, use a smooth-drum roller...If time is limited, tire roll the dirt making multiple passes with a ride-mower or utility vehicle." Also discusses calcined clay and vitrified clay stating that "calcined clay will absorb moisture and hold it, gradually releasing it to the surronding dirt as it dries down...vitrified clay is a harder material, with smaller particles and a more consisten particle size. It doesn't absorb moisture or break down as much over time."
