Abstract/Contents: | "Three rates of two formulations (foliar vs granular) of 2110 were compared against recommended rates of amidochlor and mefluidide on a 13 year old turf of 'Manhattan' perennial ryegrass (Loium perenne L.)-'Fylking' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Four replicates were treated after the first trim mow, and four replicates were treated one month later. Half of each of these plots was mowed 23 or 20 days after treated (DAT). More rain than normal prior to t 23 DAT rating may have contributed to greater than expected discoloration from amidochlor. Embark also discolored foliage more than did foliar applications of 2110. See accompanying data. All three rates of the granular 2110 had statistically superior color quality. The granular carrier was a fertilizer supplying 34 to 57 kg N/ha. At 50 DAT, standard PGRs rebounded to significantly better color quality than for any of the experimental treatments. This color advantage diminished by 72 DAT, and decreased further by 86 DAT. The fertilizer effects of the granular carrier elevated color quality ratings particularly at the median level of application. At 50 DAT and longer, foliage of PGR treated turf consistently had better color than the check. Mowed plots were generally similar to unmowed in terms of turf color. Suppression of Kentucky bluegrass seedheads was best by mefluidide. Foliar applications of 2110 were more effective in this regard than granular applications. The highest rate of foliar 2110 produced seedhead suppression of Kentucky bluegrasses comparable to that of amidochlor. Ryegrass seedheads, which developed later, were more numerous, and escapes from PGR treatment were therefore unsightly in unmowed plots. Granular applications of 2110 suppressed ryegrass seedstalks better than foliar applications. Foliar heights 100 DAT were greater with granular 2110 treatments, presumably because of the fertilizer nitrogen stimulation. High rates of the foliar 2110 retained foliar height similar to standard PGRs and significantly shorter than the unmowed checks. Late applications, in contrast with earlier, encountered hot, dry weather. Rates of granular 2110 were doubled, and nitrogen stimulation, while initially enhancing green color, eventually caused discoloration, particularly of mowed plots. Seedheads of Fylking Kentucky bluegrass were completely eliminated by trim mowing prior to the late application (May 26). Seedheads of Manhattan ryegrass were ready to emerge at this date and no PGR treatment significantly reduced their numbers. High rates of 2110 significantly inhibited ingres of crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis L.). The worst invasion of crabgrass resulted from mefluidide applications. Data in addition to the attached are available." |
