Abstract/Contents: | "All herbicides were applied with flat-fan nozzles in 50 gpa of water at 40 psi. Those study areas involving preemergence herbicide were irrigated within 24 hrs of application. All studies were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Percent of plot area covered by smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.] was determined visually in September 1988. Postemergence herbicides were applied alone or tank mixed with a preemergence herbicide and applied to areas plugged in July 1987 with either Meyer (Zoysia japonica Steud.) or Emerald (Z. japonica x Z. tenuifolia Wild. ex Trin.) zoysiagrass. When herbicides were applied on 23 May 1988, smooth crabgrass seedlings were in the 2-3 leaf stage. Treatments applied to Meyer (Table 1) that provided excellent (>90%) postemergence and subsequent preemergence control of smooth crabgrass were as follows: MON 15151 1EC (0.5 or 1.0 lb/A), and fenoxaprop tank mixed with either prodiamine, MON 15151, quinclorac or pendimethalin. Meyer cover was improved when competition from crabgrass was reduced by herbicides. At the Emerald site (data not shown in table form) excellent post and subsequent preemergence crabgrass control was provided by DCPA+MSMA (10.5 + 2.0 lb/A) and DCPA ( 8.0 or 10.5 lb/A) + fenoxaprop (0.12 lb/A). Poor control (23-57%) was provided by oxadiazon 50W (0.5 or 1.0 lb/A) + fenoxaprop (0.12 lb/A); whereas, practically no control (4%) was provided by oxadiazon 50W (0.5 or 1.0 lb/A) + MSMA (2.0 lb/A). Although oxadiazon 50W temporarily yellowed Emerald, none of the treatments caused serious injury to either cultivar of zoysiagrass. A third, early postemergence test involved quinclorac (1.0 lb/A) applications to smooth crabgrass seedling in the 1-3 leaf stage on 27 May 1988 (data not presented in table form). Rregardless of mowing 1 day prior or 3 or 6 days after application or irrigating (1.5 cm) immediately after application versus rain (3mm) five days after application, quinclorac had provided excellent postemergence and subsequent preemergence control of smooth crabgrass. Quinclorac, however, elicited a chlorosis in Olympic tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), which persisted until mid-July 1988. The herbicides listed in Table 2 were applied either 29 June when crabgrass had 1-3 tillers or on 9 July 1988 when crabgrass had 3-5 tillers. Excellent (>90%) control of 1-3 tiller crabgrass was provided by fenoxaprop (0.18 lb/A) and HOE 171 (0.18 lb/A); whereas, HOE 360 (0.09 lb/A) and quinclorac (1.5 lb/A) gave good (80-89%) control. HOE 360 (0.125 lb/A), fenoxaprop (0.25 lb/A), and fenoxaprop (0.18 lb/A) + MON 15151 (0.5 lb/A) provided excellent control of 3-5 tiller crabgrass. Other treatments had provided fair to poor control of tillered crabgrass. MON 15151 and quinclorac appeared to control prostrate spurge (Euphorbia supina Raf.). Because herbicides were applied at about the time spurge seed germinated, it could not be determined if the control was pre or postemergence. Low spurge levels in untreated plots was attributed to a dense, competitive cover provided by crabgrass and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) at the time spurge seed germinated." lb/A) and |
