Abstract/Contents:"Five studies were intiated in 1988, four had Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and one red fescue (Festuca rubra L.). Control of crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.], prostrate spurge (Euphorbia supina Raf.) and oxalis (Oxalis spp.) with herbicides was evaluated. The herbicides, formulations, rates and dates of application are shown in Table 1. Ethofumesate was applied May 5 in the April 20 study. granular materials were applied by hand and sprays at 75 GPS. In the pre-post and post trials X-77 at 5% V/V was added to MON-15151. SD66707 was used at 43.56 oz./A. Plots were 16 to 20 sq ft with 3 or 4 replications. Heavy rainfall started 16 hours after post treatments. Other trials had rainfall or irrigation 1 to 4 days later. Weed control was based on cover in check plots. Oxalis control included bensulide plots and spurge (Apr. 6 study) included treatments with heavy spurge. Crabgrass and oxalis germinated from early May to early July. Most spurge germinated in June. Crabgrass in the pre-post study crabgrass ranged from several leaf to 6 tillers. Results of the studies are shown in Table 1. Pre crabgrass. Bensulide, DCPA, flumetralin, MON-15151, peendimethalin and two applications of ethofumesate provided excellent control (90-100%). Good (80-89%) to excellent control was obtained with ethofumesate, oxadiazon and prodiamine (red fescue injury at .75 lb rate). Control from benefin + trifluralin ranged from fair (70-79%) to excellent. Isoxaben results were poor to fair. The following formulations provided similar results : DCPA WP and F, oxadiazon G, WP and ME, MON-15151 G and EC, and prodiamine G and WDG. Pre-post crabgrass. Ethofumesate, fenoxaprop and MSMA applied to 1-4 leaf crabgrass with later germination provided less than 62% control. MON-15151 (.5lb) gave excellent control, showing pre and post activity. Higher rates than those successful for pre control appear necessary. Injury in one of four KB lawns was noted at the .75 lb rate. Good to excellent control was obtained by combining fenoxaprop or MSMA with DCPA or MON 15151 and fenoxaprop with pendimethalin or prodiamine. A second MSMA treatments inproved control. Post crabgrass. Fenoxaprop EC or EW gave good to excellent control of tillered crabgrass. The SUPER formulation was more effective but caused greater KB injury. Two applications of MSMA, with of without SDS66707, provided excellent control, however, KB was injured. SDS66707 reduced the degree of injury. MON-15151 (1.5 lb) provided fair control. Pre spurge and oxalis. Excellent control of spurge was obtained with isoxaben and MON-15151 (1 lb). Fair to excellent spurge results were provided by DCPA, pendimethalin and prodiamine. Spurge results with benefin + trifluralin were poor to good and with oxadiazon poor to fair. Bensulide, ethofumesate, fenoxaprop and MSMA were the least effective materials. The most effective herbicides for oxalis control were DCPA, MON-15151, oxadiazon and pendimethalin. Fair oxalis control was provided by isoxaben and poor control with benefin + trifluralin, bensulide and prodiamine."
