Abstract/Contents:"Numerous studies in 1987 showed various ratios of clopyralid and triclopyr amine provided broad spectrum control of broadleaf weeds in turf (Proc. Northeast. Weed Sci. Soc. 42:179, 181, 183, 185, and 187). From these and other data an optimum ratio of clopyralid to triclopyr (1:3) was chosen. A premix formulation (XRM-5085) of clopyralid (0.75 lb ae/gal) and triclopyr (2.25 lb ae/gal) amine was developed and tested in 1988 to determine the efficacy of post-emergence applications on broadleaf weeds in turf. The efficacy of the premix formulation of clopyralid and triclopyr was compared with other commercially available premix formualtions of 2,4-D + triclopyr, both ester and amine, and 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba in ten seperate studies. Three studies were located in Geneva, NY; two in Ithaca, NY; one in each Silver Spring and Woodbine, MD; and three in Kingston, RI. Study design in all tests was a randomized complete block with treatments replicated three or four times. Treatments were applied with a CO2 plot sprayer delivering 50 to 80 gallons of diluent per acre. Broadleaf turf weeds present in one or more studies were broadleaf plantain (Plantago major L.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber.), ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea L.), healall (Prunella vulgaris L.), thymeleaf speedwell (Veronica serpyllifolia L.), wild violet (iola arvensis Murr.), white clover (rifolium repens L.), and yellow woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta L.). For specific weeds present in each study, application dates, rating dates, spray volume, and replications per treatment see table 1. The high rate of clopyralid (.188 lb/A) and triclopyr (.563 lb/A) provided more consistent control of white clover, dandelion, buckhorn and broadleaf plantain than the intermediate rate (.141 and .422 lb/A, respectively) and the control was equal to the commercial premixes (Table 1). In two studies ground ivy control was excellent (99-100%) with two different rates of clopyralid (.125 and .141 lb/A) and triclopyr (.374 and .422 lb/A). In seperate trials clopyralid and triclopyr provided 73% control of wild violet (.125 and .374 lb/A, respectively) and 80% control of yellow woodsorrel (.141 and .422 lb/A, respectively). An early application (4/30/88) of clopyralid and triclopyr at the Woodbine site provided greater control of red sorrel than did a later application(5/21/88) at Silver spring. Some control of healall was observed with clopyralid and triclopyr but was not commercially acceptable. Overall, ten sites the premix formulation of clopyralid and triclopyr provided commercially acceptable control of many major broadleaf weeds found in turf in the Northeast."
