Abstract/Contents:"Studies were conducted on an irrigated, thatch-free Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensisL.) turf growing on a Blount clay loam soli in Delaware, OH, to determine the activity of tridiphane alone and in combination with bensulide for control of smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum Schreb.). In a three-year study (1985 to 1987) tridiphane at 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 kg ha-1 was applied on five equally spaced dates between April 1 and June 15 to compare its soil resiual activity to bensulide at 8.4 kg ha-1. treatments were replicated three times in a split-plot, randomized block design, with application dates as whole plots. In another three-year study (1984 to 1986) tank mixtures of tridiphane at 0.6 to 2.2 kg ha-1 plus bensulide at 2.1 to 6.2 kg ha-1 were applied postemergent to determine the effects of rates and application dates on control of crabgrass in turfs treated preemergent with reduced rates of bensulide (2.2 to 9.0 kg ha-1). The experimental design was a split-plot, randomized block with three replicates. Whole plots were preemergent treatments applied in early April while postemeregent treatments were applied as subplots in either late May or late June. Chemical treatments were in a factorial arrangement using a central composite design. All chemical treatments were applied at 1627 L ha-1 to 1.2 by 2.4 m plots. Adjacent to each plot was a 0.6 by 2.4 m untreated check strip. Crabgrass groundcover was determined in late August or early September. Tridiphane effectively suppressed crabgrass on three of five application dates in 1985, on two dates in 1986, and on one date in 1987. In general, preemergent applications or late postemergent applications failed to suppress weeds season-long. tridiphane rate response differences were not evident preemergent but were for postemergent applications. In the factorial study, preemergent bensulide (B) treatments and tridiphane (T) treatments were highly significant for all years evaluated while postemergent bensulide (Bp) treatments were only significant in 1986. Dates(D) of postemergent applications were not significant in any year. The interaction B x D was significant in 1984 and 1986, but not in 1985. In 1984 the only other significant interaction was T x Bp. There were no significant interaction in 1985. In 1986 there were several significant interactions including: T x D, B x T, Bp xD, B x Bp, and B x T x Bp. The variation in year to year results for both studies may reflect differences in crabgrass phenology in each year. In 1984 and 1985 crabgrass emerged as a single flush in mid-to-late April, with little or no second flush of weed emergence. In 1986 and 1987 crabgrass emergence was delayed 3 weeks and a second flush was observed in late June each year. These results suggest tridiphane has very little premergent soil resiual activity and that postemergence treatments must be timed correctly. If applied too early in years where subsequent seed emergence occurs, a tank mixture with a soil residual herbicide is warranted."
