Abstract/Contents:"Stripe smut, Ustilago striiformis (West.) Niessl, infects numerous species of Gramineae, and, although usually confined to the sheaths and blades of leaves, sori occasionally form in inflorescences (1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9). The importance of this phenomenon in dissemination of the disease is unknown; however, inflorescences are not readily formed on some stripe-smutted grass species, and when they do occur, viable seed may be absent (2,7). Most observations of stripe-smutted inflorescences have been on redtop, Agrostis alba, and timothy, Phleum pratensis; these species have revealed sorus formation in rachises, glumes, lemmas, paleae, stamens, and ovaries (2,7,9). Extensive research with timothy has shown that U. striiformis does not infect floral parts and infected seed rarely occurs by mycelium advancing from infected culms into floral parts (3). Stripe-smutted inflorescences have been reported on bluegrass (presumably Poa pratensis), but the reports have been restricted to observations without description (1,8,9). Therefore, the purpose of this report is to illustrate the grass symptomatology of Kentucky bluegrass inflorescences infected by U. striiformis."
