Abstract/Contents: | "Tall fescue accumulates up to 50% of DM as water soluble carbohydrate (WSC), mainly fructan, in the leaf growth zone. Based on six seperate experiments giving a range of dry matter import to the growth zone we quantified the partitioning-growth relationships. Sucrose import was used primarily for synthesis of WSC-free DM in the basal region before fructan biosynthesis was accelerated. Synthesis of WSC-free DM became saturated as import into the growth zone increased, but fructan synthesis increased. Due to its low degree of polymerization fructan contributed osmotically to cell elongation. After cells stopped elongating WSC decreased, and its loss in weight accounted for 40-60% of the weight increase of WSC-free DM in the same tissue. WSC-free DM accumulation in the elongation zone was saturated at 500 umol m-2 s-1 PPFD, and over 50% of the photosynthate was being used to synthesize WSC, mostly fructan." |
