Abstract/Contents:"A growth chamber experiment using two genotypes of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) differing in leaf elongation rate (LER) was performed to determine the efficiency of structural dry matter (SDM) growth. Plants were grown in continuous light at 20 degres C. Elongating leaves were sectioned into 3-mm lengths from the ligule. One genotype had about a 20% higher LER due to greater elongation in the distal portion of the elongation zone. Maximum expansive growth occurred at about 10 mm form the ligule in both genotypes. SDM content (ug/mm) was higher in the high LER genotype, but increased rapidly in both genotypes to 60mm. SDM deposition rate was biphaic but declined to near zero at 60mm. Respiration was high in the cell division zone (CDZ) but low at about 40 mm for both genotypes. Genotypes had similar growth and maintenance respiration. Respiration in the CDZ was greater in the high LER genotype. Caloric content of meristem segments was also determined. This suggests that differences in LER were mainly due to a larger leaf meristem of similar efficiency."
