Abstract/Contents: | "Peroxidase activity may limit cell wall extensibility by causing covalent bonds formation, IAA oxidation, or lignification. Change in localization and specific activity of peroxidase during cell elongation and secondary cell wall deposition were determined in tall fescue leaf blades. Anatomical studies indicated that, except for protoxylem, no significant accumulation of secondary cell wall or lignin occurs in tissues before cessation of epidermal cell elongation. Peroxidase activity, localized histochemically, was present in both xylem and pholem in the region of active cell division, in epidermal and bundle sheath tissues during early cell elongation, and in virtually all tissues before cessation of epidermal cell elongation. In grass leaves, cell maturity increases with distance from the leaf base. Specific activity of cell wall peroxidase decreased with distance from the leaf base within the region of epidermal cell elongation, then increased with distance within the region of secondary cell wall deposition. This pattern of peroxidase activity was correlated positively with dry weight per unit leaf area, a measure of cell wall peroxidase activity is related tto both cell differentiation and accumulation of cell wall material in tall fescue leaf blades." |
