Abstract/Contents:Reports on a panel discussion on transition problems of overseeding bermudagrass with ryegrass on golf courses in the Coachella Valley, California. Dormant bermudagrass was overseeded with perennial ryegrass and resulted in a very durable and persistent ryegrass turf which did not yield to summer heat and the encroachment of bermudagrass. The bermudagrass, however, surcumbs to heat stress leaving dead spots with no bermudagrass. The regular application of potassium in fertilization programs may help the bermudagrass in the transition process. Renovation techniques may also be hindering the transition process as vertical mowing and scalping of the bermuda turf increases winter kill and slow recovery in the spring.
