Abstract/Contents:Presents a photograph of a fungus that has attached itself to silver birch trees. Explains that "the fungus...is called birch bracket fungus (Piptoporus betulinus) and is specific to birch trees." Also explains that "the visible bracket or 'fruiting body' is the outward sign of the fungus, while the hyphae (fungal roots) work within the tree to break the structure of the wood and cause 'heart rot' (breakdown of older wood at the centre [center] of the trunk), which will eventually kill the tree." Notes that "the fungus spreads via spores, which are airborne and enter the tree through wounds and breaks."
