Abstract/Contents:Describes field trials to evaluate drenches of cresylic acid as a chemical control method for Marasmius oreades (Bolt. Ex. Fr.) Fr. fairy rings. "In trial 1, when applied as drenches, cresylic acid and oxycarboxin significantly reduced M. oreades fruiting body production for at least 15 months after treatment application. Soil cores taken 2 and 12 months after treatment application indicated a marked reduction in sub-surface mycelium in plots treated with cresylic acid and oxycarboxin. Turf killed by M. oreades was re-colonised by grass approximately 6 months after cresylic acid and oxycarboxin treatment. In trial 2, cresylic acid, applied in conjunction with the excavation treatment, resulted in no fruiting body production in M. oreades being observed for 15 months after treatment application. Also, soil cores taken from excavated/cresylic acid treated plots 3 and 14 months after treatment application did not reveal any sub-surface M. oreades mycelium."
