| Abstract/Contents: | "Pathogenic bacterial isolates from diseased Agrostis palustris Huds. cv. Toronto from several midwestern states were identical in standard physiological, morphological and serological assays. The bentgrass bacterium exhibited the following characteristics: rod-shape 0.3-0.5 by 1.0-1.5 υ, Gram(-), oxidase x (-), catalase (+), obligate aerobe, H2S production, starch hydrolysis utilization of casein, gelatin lequefaction and growth at 36 C but not at 41 C. The bentgrass bacterium exhibited bright yellow pigmentation and copius slime was produced on yeast extract-dextrose-calcium carbonate agar. These characteristics resembled those for the genus Xanthomonas although Ouchterlony gel double diffusion tests suggested no serological relationship between the bentgrass bacterium and several known Xanthomonas campestris pathovars." |
