Abstract/Contents:"Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is an important cool season turfgrass species that is used extensively in the Midwest for home lawns, golf courses, and athletic fields. There are hundreds of Kentucky bluegrass cultivars available to consumers, however, there are no reports of their field reaction to necrotic ring spot (NRS) incited by the root and crowning-infecting fungus Ophiosphaerella korrae. Therefore, our study was initiated to evaluated 100 commercial cultivars and experimental lines of Kentucky bluegrass for their susceptibility to a WI isolate of O. korrae obtained from Dr. Ned Tisserat of Kansas State University. The cultivars were established in 5 ^D#x 5 ft plots in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The center of each plot was artificially inoculated in November, 2001 by removing three soil plugs, inserting inoculum, and replacing the plugs. Initial symptoms of NRS were noticed in August of 2002, while distinct "frog-eye" symptoms were first noticed in July of 2003. Visual ratings (0-5) of disease severity were recorded in August, 2002 and July, 2003. There were significant differences in disease expression among the cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass. In most plots, the disease symptoms were limited to the center, inoculated area. However, some plots had diseased patches through the plot. Furthermore, the susceptibility of the cultivars used in this study showed a strong correlation with the NRS rating for the 2000 NTEP Kentucky bluegrass trial in WI."
