Abstract/Contents: | "The turfgrass industries in Georgia are rapidly growing in number, volume, and types of services. There are approximately 1.6 million acres of turf in Georgia with a maintenance value of $1.56 billion. Using data collected in 2002 and 2003, the diagnosis, characterization, and dynamics of turfgrass disease was evaluated. In an attempt to reduce the number of disease cases and therefore limiting their economic impact, intensive educational programs were initiated to train turfgrass care professionals in disease identification and management issues. Clientele included landscape industry professionals, lawn care professionals, golf course personnel, the Georgia state agricultural inspectors and agricultural county agents. In 2003, turfgrass samples accounted for 18% of the total number of samples submitted to the disease clinic, compared to 30% in 2002. Despite the favorable conditions for disease development observed in 2003, the total commercial turfgrass samples fell from 54% in 2002 to 39% in 2003. Specifically for golf courses, bentgrass disease dropped from 17% of the total turf samples in 2002 to only 5% in 2003. Meanwhile, homeowner samples accounted for 44% in 2002 and 61% of the turf samples in 2003. From these analyses, it can be concluded that the trainings provided in 2003 played a significant role in the reduction of turfgrass samples submitted to the disease clinic." |
