Abstract/Contents:"The practice of utilizing reclaimed wastewater as a substitute for former potable water uses is rapidly becoming a necessary option in South Florida where potable groundwater resources are limited. That message was emphasized by Gary W. Bors of Hazen and Sawyer in a paper presented at the Southeast Workshop on Composting and Land Application in November, 1984. The title of his paper was 'Effluent Disposal and Wastewater Recycling in Southeast Florida.' The experiences of Florida communities of Sunrise (15 MGD), Tamarac (5 MGD), Jupiter (6 MGD), and Okeechobee (4 MGD) were cited. Bors explains that users who seek fresh water for irrigation purposes must compete for the available shallow aquifer groundwater against higher public needs such as regional water supplies. Considering Florida's rapid population growth, such competition is stiff indeed. Potential users of reclaimed wastewater --such as managers of golf courses and parks --have requested water management, health and environmental agencies to closely examine the feasibility of such reuse. Bors provides this explanation of the three modes of land application recognized by the State of Florida and the EPA: (1) slow rate irrigation, (2) overland flow and (3) high rate infiltration."
