Abstract/Contents: | "Due to thatch accumulation, turfgrass systems are inherently high in organic carbon. Numerous pesticides are reported to bind to the organic portion of the soil. To account for increased pesticide binding, higher doses of pesticides are used to obtain the desirable efficacy. This experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between organic matter content and herbicide phytotoxicity and to validate the bioassay technique for four preemergence herbicides. The effect of herbicide, dose and soil organic matter content was measured using the bioassay technique where radicle length and fresh weight of pregerminated seeds of Avena sativa were used as indicators. No effect of organic matter content on herbicide phytotoxicity was found. However herbicide and dose were significant factors. Bensulide (S-(O,O-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate) ester of N-(2-mercaptoethyl) benzenesulfonamide and dithiopyr (3,5-pyridinedicarbothioic acid, 2-(difluoromethyl) 4-(2-methylpropyl) -6-trifluoromethyl)-S,S-dimethyl ester)were the least phytotoxic and the most phytotoxic herbicide, respectively. Increasing herbicide dose (0, 1, 2 and 4 mgL-1) caused significant decrease on the radicle length but no effect on fresh weight. The bioassay technique can be used to detect the presence of preemergence herbicide in soil with high content of organic matter. However, if an exact determination of the level of herbicide in the soil is required, a chemical analytical method is more precise." |
