Abstract/Contents:"The quality of the take-off and landing areas for horses jumping over obstacles during eventing competitions, often called 'footing', plays an important role in the safety of horses and riders. However, little research data are available to quantify soil characteristics which affect footing. In this study, we measured soil hardness with the Clegg hammer in the takeoff and landing areas of jumps compared with areas without horse traffic. We also evaluated two soil penetrometers, one sensitive, but expensive research model (Rimik) and one inexpensive, hand-held model (Lang) to determine whether the Lang penetrometer could be used as a quick test to assay soil compaction in jumping areas. All three pieces of equipment were able to differentiate between trafficked and non-trafficked areas, but they could not be used to differentiate between different levels of traffic. However, the use of these devices will be limited until we can calibrate the data against course official and rider perceptions, eventually developing specific criteria against which footing can be judged as too soft or too hard."
