Abstract/Contents:"In Italy there is a great potential for the warm season turfgrass species to become the dominant species used for sports surfaces, including golf putting greens. However, fall overseeding with cool season turfgrasses is considered a necessary practice for the use of a dormant turf in winter. For this reason, deeper knowledge of overseeding, winter management and transition techniques would be invaluable for a further spread of warm season species used in putting greens. A trial was conducted from 2006 to 2008 on a hybrid bermudagrass putting green on which seven cool season turfgrass species were overseeded: Lolium perenne 'Fairway'; Lolium perenne' Vantage'; Lolium multiflorum 'Pollanum'; Poa trivialis 'Winterplay'; Festuca rubra commutate 'Ombretta'; Festuca rubra tricophylla 'Seabreeze'; Agrostis stolonifera 'Penncross'. Turf color, green cover, turf quality, spring cool season shoot density, warm season lateral stem characteristics and winter green speed were periodically assessed. The best adapted cool season grasses were 'Fairway' perennial ryegrass, 'Ombretta' chewings fescue and 'Seabreeze' slender creeping red fescue, although fine fescues showed only partially successful spring transition. The annual ryegrass 'Pollanum' proved unsuitable for overseeding a bermudagrass putting green due to the low mowing height adopted. The horizontal stem characteristics of hybrid bermudagrass were influenced by the presence of overseeded cool season species with a general reduction in total node density and an increase in total stem volume when bunch-type species were used."
