Abstract/Contents:"Buffalograss turfgrass breeding programs need diverse germplasm to use as parental material, develop diverse progeny, and develop improved cultivars. The goal of our breeding program is to develop and release vegetative and seeded buffalograss cultivars with improved turfgrass performance. This study was initiated to investigate the most advanced germplasm in our program for turfgrass performance characteristics and improved seed yield potential. Research was conducted at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln John Seaton Anderson Turfgrass. Research Facility located near Mead, NE (41°11' N, 96°28' W). Soil on the site was a silty, clay loam (Tomek silty clay loam, fine smectitic, mesic Pachic Argiudoll). Data were collected from three trials, Advanced Lines I, II, and III established in 2002, 2003, and 2004, respectively. Turfgrass performance varied among genotypes for quality, color, density, spring green up and seed yield. Thirty two percent of the genotypes evaluated equaled or exceeded the turfgrass quality rating of the standard entries. Seed (bur) yield ranged from 460 to 4964 kg ha-1, which was a 10 fold increase between the lowest and highest yielding genotypes. Based on this research, it can be concluded that excellent diversity exists for turfgrass performance and seed yield potential among the advanced lines in our germplasm."
